Russia to increase military spending in 2027 – Reuters

Russia plans to spend US$202.58 billion on defence in 2027, which is approximately 27% more than previously budgeted.

Details: Russia plans to spend RUB 17.1 trillion (approximately US$202.58 billion) on defence, a 27% increase over the RUB 13.5 trillion (US$159 billion) projected in the initial budget plan.

It is noted that this represents the highest figure since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022.

This data is according to Russian government documents reviewed by Reuters on Monday 28 September.

According to these documents, total defence expenditures over the next three years will reach RUB 50 trillion (US$589.6 billion). For 2026, the Russian government previously planned defence spending of RUB 12.1 trillion (US$142 billion), though the actual amount is classified and will not be disclosed. A portion of military spending may also be reflected under other sections of the budget.

The documents also reveal that the Russian government raised its 2026 budget deficit forecast to 3.2% of gross domestic product, up from the previous estimate of 1.6% of GDP. Overall budget expenditures in 2026 are set to rise by 13.2% to RUB 48.6 trillion (US$573 billion) or 20.9% of GDP.

Furthermore, the obtained documents indicate that a new windfall tax on metallurgical and mining companies is expected to bring Russia approximately RUB 200 billion (US$2.3 billion) annually.
