Details: Merz's visit is intended to affirm Germany's continued support for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.
Sources told dpa that this support will include interceptor drones and long-range weapons.
"If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz stated after arriving in Kyiv by train.
He is accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and 10 executives from companies from the defence and energy sectors.
Government sources told dpa that Merz intends to make commitments to Ukraine regarding further financial and military support, including the supply of thousands of interceptor drones and efforts to accelerate the production of long-range weapons.
Background:
- Merz recently said he is working on solutions to strengthen Ukraine's air defence, which is currently Kyiv's biggest weakness.
- On 29 September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had received air defence support packages from a number of countries.
- European Pravda also reported, citing sources, on the possibility that one or several EU member states could transfer Patriot interceptors they already have to Ukraine, with Ukraine using funds from a €90 billion loan to order an equivalent number of missiles for that country from the US manufacturer.
