Ukraine and Germany sign series of defence and energy agreements

Ukraine and Germany signed a number of documents covering defence, security, energy and rescue technologies at the Ukrainian-German Business Forum on Sunday 4 October.

Details: Key agreements include the procurement of thousands of IRIS-T missiles, new firing modules and radars, alongside joint development of interceptor drones and expanded energy sector cooperation.
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence concluded three memorandums with the German company Diehl Defence, which provide for the procurement and delivery of thousands of IRIS-T missiles, IRIS-T firing modules and additional missiles and joint work on high-precision artillery ammunition.
A separate memorandum with the company Hensoldt concerns the procurement of tactical radars and surveillance systems.
Another document – a letter of intent with Quantum Systems – provides for the testing and procurement of interceptor drones designed to counter jet-powered Shahed-type loitering munitions.
In addition, the National Guard of Ukraine agreed with Quantum Systems and Ukraine's Frontline Robotics on the localisation of Ukrainian drone production in Germany.
A separate memorandum between the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and Alpha Robotics Germany relates to cooperation in unmanned systems for firefighting and rescue operations.
In the energy sector, Siemens Energy signed two memorandums with Ukrainian counterparts: one with the Ministry of Energy and another with Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC.
Another document was concluded by German operators 50Hertz Transmission and Amprion with Ukrenergo, Ukraine's state-owned electricity transmission operator. The agreements are aimed at further cooperation in the energy sector and strengthening Ukraine's energy security.
The signing of the documents was part of high-level Ukrainian-German meetings on 4 October.
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the total value of the agreements with Germany exceeds €8.5 billion.
