Russian attack hits checkpoint on Moldova-Ukraine border, injuring border guard – photo

Operations at the Palanca–Maiaky–Udobne border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova have been suspended after a projectile fired during Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure ricocheted and struck a passenger bus and a border control booth. The vehicle was damaged and a border guard sustained minor injuries.

Details: Traffic from the junction of the R-30 and R-31 roads in the Ștefan Vodă district towards Palanca has been temporarily suspended pending the completion of an investigation at the scene.

Patrol officers are redirecting traffic to the Tudora border crossing, and drivers are advised to avoid the entire area.

According to Moldova's Border Police, the incident occurred at approximately 09:38 on 5 October.

"The Border Police, together with the Customs Service, is continuously monitoring the situation in order to keep it under control and remains in contact with the competent Ukrainian authorities," the statement said.

People are strongly advised to refrain from travelling to the area. If they hear drones or explosions near the border, the authorities advise them to remain calm, take shelter indoors and rely exclusively on official sources for information.

People are also urged not to approach debris from aircraft, ammunition or other suspicious objects and to call the 112 emergency service immediately.

Background:

  • On Saturday 3 October, Moldova's national airspace monitoring system detected several unmanned aerial vehicles. The National Army's Air Operations Service reported that five UAVs entered Moldova's airspace between 07:45 and 08:00.
  • Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi later clarified that the incident involved three missiles and two drones, debris from which fell in four districts of the country.
  • Moldova's Defence Ministry subsequently reported a sixth unauthorised incursion into the country's airspace amid Russia's large-scale morning attack on Ukraine.
