Commissioner Kos hopes to open two more negotiating clusters for Ukraine and Moldova next week
Two more negotiating clusters for Ukraine and Moldova could be opened next week if the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) adopts the necessary law.
Source: Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, following the Moldova-EU Association Council meeting on 5 October, as reported by a European Pravda correspondent in Brussels
Details: Next week, the EU may open two more clusters for Ukraine and Moldova.
Quote from Kos: "It is possible that we would open the next two clusters for Moldova and Ukraine next week during the IGCs [Intergovernmental Conferences – ed.] or with the IGCs in Luxembourg."
Details: She emphasised that for this to happen, the Ukrainian parliament must approve the necessary draft law [this refers to amendments to the law on education regarding national minorities, insisted upon by Hungary, which has been blocking the opening of new clusters for Ukraine – ed.].
Quote from Kos: "We are very much aware of the procedures in the Verkhovna Rada, but we hope that the law will pass the Rada. Once this will happen... the member states will have to speed up the procedure."
Background:
- As reported by European Pravda, a draft law on education in the languages of national minorities was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on 1 October. Its approval should help lift Hungary's veto on unblocking two clusters in the negotiations.
- Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed hope that the approval of the legislative changes will lead to Hungary unblocking the next two clusters in the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
- It should be noted that the Albanian prime minister stated in an interview that the EU is making unrealistic promises to Ukraine regarding membership.
