Several hours before the sabotage, armed individuals on the Belarusian side openly threatened personnel of the Latvian National Armed Forces.

They were forcibly driving a group of more than 20 illegal migrants towards Latvia.

"Unlike many previous cases, this time the provocation was particularly blatant and aggressive," he stressed.

Background:

  • On 22 July, the Latvian National Armed Forces fired warning shots and used tear gas against migrants attempting to cross the border illegally.
  • On 31 July, the Latvian authorities announced the temporary suspension of border crossings from Belarus.
  • On 11 August, Latvian border guards discovered an underground tunnel near the border with Belarus. A group of 15 people had attempted to enter the country through it.
  • On 15 September, military exercises began in Belarus near the borders of European Union countries. That same night, a Russian drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus.
