Details: Dombrava said the incident had been a targeted attack on border infrastructure facilities. The perpetrators disabled a distribution cabinet and stole surveillance cameras. They returned to Belarus before a Latvian border patrol arrived.
Several hours before the sabotage, armed individuals on the Belarusian side openly threatened personnel of the Latvian National Armed Forces.
They were forcibly driving a group of more than 20 illegal migrants towards Latvia.
"Unlike many previous cases, this time the provocation was particularly demonstrative and aggressive," he stressed.
Background:
- On 22 July, the Latvian National Armed Forces fired warning shots and used tear gas against migrants attempting to cross the border illegally.
- On 31 July, the Latvian authorities announced the temporary suspension of border crossings from Belarus.
- On 11 August, Latvian border guards discovered an underground tunnel near the border with Belarus. A group of 15 people had attempted to enter the country through it.
- On 15 September, Belarus began military exercises near the borders of European Union countries. That same night, a Russian drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus.
