Details: Koretskyi said the funds will be used to meet Ukraine's most urgent defence needs.

The European Commission specified that the funding covers drones, drone interceptors, drone ammunition and missiles manufactured by Ukrainian companies.

Including this tranche, Ukraine has received almost €13 billion for defence needs under the programme.

"We continue working with our European partners to ensure that the remaining funds arrive on time and in full," Koretskyi wrote, thanking the EU leadership and member states for their unwavering support for Ukraine and assistance in strengthening its defence capabilities.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: "Russia is continuing its deliberate strategy of terror – trying to make daily life unbearable for Ukrainians. Today's disbursement will help strengthen Ukraine's defence industry. And Ukraine's ability to defend itself. To protect people and infrastructure."

Background:

  • European Pravda reported that on 18 September, the EU transferred a €3.3 billion tranche to Ukraine as part of the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan.
  • It was previously reported that Ukraine will purchase missiles for IRIS-T air defence systems from Germany within the defence component of the EU loan.
  • The United Kingdom recently announced that it is providing £100 million (about US$135 million) for an air defence package for Ukraine under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List ahead of winter, including missiles for Patriot systems.
