Details: Witkoff and Kushner met Trump to present the latest US proposal and obtain his feedback ahead of talks in Miami, which are expected to last two days.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Deputy National Security Advisor Mike Needham also attended the meeting.
One proposal involves a partial ceasefire that would halt attacks on energy infrastructure facilities and grain shipments. Although Ukraine has said it is ready to take this step, Russia has shown little willingness to do so.
"They are all nervous about the winter. It will be a tough winter if the war does not stop. So the US is trying to mediate with the sides, with the goal of creating a unified proposal," a US source said.
The US source said the parties would discuss proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine, a post-war reconstruction plan and other aspects of the conflict.
Background:
- Axios also reported that Witkoff and Kushner might visit Moscow in late October with new proposals.
- On 8 October, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian negotiators would be in the US on 9-10 October for talks with the American side.
- He said European partners would join the Ukrainian negotiating team.
- The day before, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said diplomatic negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war are currently proving "elusive".
