Details: The UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine and will continue to put pressure on Russia through sanctions, the government spokesperson said on Friday, after US President Donald Trump announced an agreement under which Russia would supply diesel fuel to the US and the global market.
"The UK's position could not be clearer. We will continue working closely with international partners to ensure Ukraine has the military and financial support it needs to defend itself. We will also maintain pressure on Russia through the toughest sanctions regime ever imposed by the UK," the spokesperson said.
Background:
- Axios reported that Trump decided to strike a deal with Russia on diesel fuel after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ignored half a dozen US requests to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries.
- Meanwhile, talks involving Ukrainian, European and US representatives ended earlier than planned, although Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the meetings as productive. The talks in Miami had been expected to last two days.
