Quote: "We ended five wars thanks to tariffs. I said, 'If you continue to fight, we're going to put a 200% tariff on you', and they stopped.

We should probably immediately do it with Ukraine and Russia. Never thought of it."

Details: However, Trump contradicted himself, noting that "we don't buy enough" for such an approach to work.

Background:

  • Trump signed an executive order waiving certain sanctions, restrictions and tariffs against Russia provided for under the Graham Act.
  • The New York Times reported that Trump's administration had proposed that Europe "resume buying more Russian gas".
  • Trump said in spring 2025 that he would impose 200% tariffs on all wines and other alcoholic products from EU countries unless the EU scrapped its tariff on whisky.
