Details: Commenting on a report by The Wall Street Journal about a US proposal to resume Russian gas supplies to Europe, Peskov said that the current "situation on the ground indicates that it is impossible" to implement plans to resume the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
He also added that, for now, it was hardly possible to speak of supplies being resumed in the future either.
Nevertheless, Peskov noted that further plans would depend on the wishes of buyers and the capabilities of suppliers.
Background:
- The Wall Street Journal reported that the US supports the earliest possible resumption of Russian natural gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine as part of negotiations aimed at reaching an energy ceasefire ahead of the approaching winter.
- The European Commission previously stated that even after the end of Russia's war against Ukraine, the EU does not plan to resume imports of Russian gas, as the phase-out is enshrined in existing legislation.
- Earlier reports indicated that the US had proposed that European countries unfreeze some Russian sovereign assets blocked after the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine and transfer them to a financial structure under Washington's control with the aim of reviving peace negotiations.
