The National Association of Hungarian Journalists (MÚOSZ) have called on the EU to ban the Russian propaganda channel RTR Planeta in the EU.

According to MÚOSZ: "[…] because our blood runs cold with the knowledge that this news (actually, fake news) channel is still available from major cable operators in Hungary and, probably, elsewhere in Europe. In their broadcasts, they are able to continue speaking in Russian about the Russian attack on Ukraine as a ‘special military operation’.

This propaganda channel slavishly follows Putin’s narrative and shows no sensitivity to acts of war against humanity."

Details: Last week, Márton Tompos of the liberal Hungarian party Momentum called on Telekom and Vodafone to ban the Russian channel because it also broadcasts programmes by Vladimir Solovyov, one of the most ardent propagandists of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Vodafone initially responded that the channel is not included in the list of TV channels banned in the EU. Telekom stated that they are monitoring the changing legal environment and was in talks with the company about this. For now, RTR Planeta is available through both of these service providers.

Background: Earlier, both Latvia and Estonia have banned RTR Planeta.
