Medvedev calls sanctions an act of aggression, evoking earlier threat of nuclear response

Kateryna Tyshchenko – Friday, 8 April 2022, 17:38

Dmitriy Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said that Western sanctions against Russia might count as an act of international aggression. Earlier he stated that such an act of aggression was among the reasons for Russia’s possible use of nuclear weapons.

According to Medvedev: "In the present circumstances, sanctions may be considered an act of aggression against the Russian Federation, a form of hybrid warfare.

In this instance, the country that has suffered aggression – that is, Russia – has a right to individual and collective defence under national and international law.

There is no doubt that Russia will exercise this right in ways and within the limits that it considers appropriate."

Background: For 8 years, Russia has been carrying out hybrid acts of aggression against Ukraine. On 24 February 2022, the Russian Federation began a full-scale invasion, which has resulted in numerous civilian casualties. In response, Western governments continue to impose new sanctions against Russia.

Earlier: On 26 March, Medvedev outlined four cases in which Russia might deploy nuclear weapons.
