Quote: "I always emphasise in all negotiations that the seventh package of European Union sanctions is needed as soon as possible. Russia must feel a constant increase in pressure because of the war and its aggressive anti-European policy."

"Another Russian threat to Lithuania, another wave of energy pressure, another batch of lies from Russian officials about the food crisis – all these are arguments in favour of adopting the seventh package of sanctions."

Background:

It was reported that the draft communiqué prepared for the summit of EU leaders did not mention the seventh package of sanctions against Russia for the war it is waging against Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the EU to prepare a seventh package of sanctions. Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, signed a letter setting out Ukraine's vision for the seventh package.

The Polish government also called for additional sanctions against Russia ahead of the meeting of EU ministers of foreign affairs in Luxembourg.

On 21 June, it was reported that the European Union was considering imposing sanctions on Russian gold as part of the seventh package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
