Erdoğan suggests to revive negotiations between Ukraine, Russia on the basis of the March agreements

EUROPEAN PRAVDA – THURSDAY, 18 AUGUST 2022, 20:08

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey, emphasised the need to reach a diplomatic settlement between Ukraine and Russia. According to him, the way to achieve this is to return to negotiations based on the parameters formed at the meeting in Istanbul in March.

European Pravda, with reference to Anadolu, notices that the Turkish leader stated this after a meeting in Lviv with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General.

According to him, during the negotiations, members assessed the chances of transforming the positive atmosphere created by the Istanbul Agreement into permanent peace.

"The international community has a great responsibility for the restoration of the diplomatic process, we specifically pointed out that this should be done," Erdoğan said.

He emphasised that Turkey supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

"We expressed concern about the ongoing fighting around the Zaporizhzhia NPP. We do not want to experience a new Chernobyl. As Turkey, on the one hand, we are making efforts to end the conflict through a diplomatic solution, on the other hand, we have been supporting our Ukrainian friends and continue doing so," said Erdoğan.

"Personally, I believe that this war will eventually end at the negotiating table. Actually, Mr. Zelensky and Guterres agree on this issue. The whole point is to determine the shortest and fairest way to the negotiating table," he said.

According to Erdoğan, it is possible to revive the negotiations based on the parameters that were formed in Istanbul in March.

"We are ready to play the role of facilitator or mediator again to provide all kinds of support to achieve this goal," the Turkish president said.

In addition, according to Erdoğan, during the meeting, members discussed the exchange of prisoners of war and Turkish initiatives in this matter.

As reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also held a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Lviv.
