Russia attacked infrastructure in 9 Ukrainian oblasts on 22 October – General Staff report

Energy and critical infrastructure in Volyn, Rivne, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts came under Russian attack on Saturday, 22 October.

Energy and critical infrastructure targets in Volyn, Rivne, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts came under enemy fire."

Details: Russian forces are attempting to maintain control over previously occupied territories and are focusing their efforts on holding back Ukrainian troops on several fronts. They are also continuing to make attempts to advance on the Avdiivka and Bakhmut fronts.

Over the course of the past 24 hours, Ukraine’s defence forces [collective name for all Ukrainian military formations involved in the ongoing combat in this country - ed.] have repelled Russian attacks in the vicinity of Bakhmut, Ozarianivka and Odradivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Russian forces carried out attacks on the following fronts:

  • On the Sivernshchyna front: the Russians deployed mortars and tubed artillery, to fire on areas in and around Bachivsk, Starykove, Hudove, Atynske, Basivka and Yunakivka (Sumy Oblast);
  • On the Slobozhanshchyna front: Russian forces deployed mortars and tubed and rocket artillery to fire on areas in and around Mala Vovcha, Krasne Pershe, Berestove and Kamianka (Kharkiv Oblast);
  • On the Bakhmut front: Russian forces deployed tank guns and various types of artillery to fire on areas in and around Soledar, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Bilohorivka, Spirne, Zelenopillia, Klushchiivka and Maiorsk;
  • On the Avdiivka front: Russian forces used tank guns, mortars and tubed and rocket artillery to fire on areas in and around Avdiivka, Vesele, Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Novomykhailivka and Pervomaiske;
  • On the Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhia fronts: the Russians shelled areas in and around Vremivka (Donetsk Oblast); Dorozhnianka, Stepnohirsk and Orikhiv (Zaporizhzhia Oblast); and Dobra Nadiia (Dnipropetrovsk Oblast); they also carried out a rocket attack on the city of Nikopol;
  • Russian forces fired on military and civilian infrastructure on the Pivdennyi Buh front. More than 20 towns and villages in the vicinity of the line of contact came under Russian fire.

According to the most up-to-date information, Ukraine’s defence forces killed around 200 and wounded over 150 Russian soldiers in a strike on an enemy manpower and equipment concentration in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Ukrainian forces also destroyed an enemy ammunition dump and 10 pieces of weapons and military equipment.

Ukrainian aircraft carried out 10 airstrikes on 22 October, striking nine areas of concentration of Russian weapons and equipment and several anti-aircraft defence systems. In addition, Ukrainian air defence forces struck down one enemy helicopter.

Ukraine’s Rocket Forces and Artillery struck a Russian command post, two areas where Russian military personnel, weapons and equipment were concentrated and one ammunition storage point.

Background:

  • Russian forces carried out a large-scale missile attack on energy infrastructure targets in different parts of Ukraine.
  • The Office of the President of Ukraine estimated that Russian missile attacks on energy facilities have left 1,451,603 Ukrainians across the country without electricity.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that since the night of 22 October, Russians have fired 36 missiles at Ukraine; most of these were shot down.
