Italy to help reconstruct cathedral in Odesa damaged by Russian missile

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni has said that her country is ready to contribute to the reconstruction of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odesa, which was damaged by a missile attack by Russian occupation forces.

Details: Meloni stressed that Russian troops are destroying grain warehouses, depriving millions of people of food and ruining "our European civilisation, its sacred symbols".

Background

  • On the night of 22-23 July, Russia launched another missile attack on Odesa. The Odesa Oblast Military Administration reported that six buildings were destroyed. The Transfiguration Cathedral, the largest cathedral in the city, was also severely damaged. 
  • The Air Force of Ukraine reported that Russians fired 19 missiles of various types, including five Oniks missiles, on Odesa Oblast overnight. Air defence forces shot down nine missiles.
