Hungary is ready to implement the national ban on the import of Ukrainian grain if the EU does not prolong this measure after 15 September.

Details: Hungary wants the EU ban on internal trade of Ukrainian grain to be extended in five EU member states bordering Ukraine after the current measure ends on 15 September.

"Hungary will ask the EU to extend the ban from September 16," Gergely Gulyás said.

In May, the EU allowed Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to implement a ban on the domestic sales of Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seed, while permitting transit of such cargoes for export elsewhere. This ban is set to expire on 15 September.

Background:

  • Poland has stated that it will not cancel the ban even if the EU does not agree to extend it. Hungary’s readiness to resort to the same decisions strengthens the position of Warsaw.
  • Reportedly, the majority of the EU member states do not support the extension of the embargo on import of grain from Ukraine beyond 15 September, and in case Poland takes unilateral measures, some countries may resort to countermeasures.
  • Ukraine is firm in its demands that the EU must cancel the unilateral restrictions on Ukrainian exports and thinks that Brussels must reach an agreement with Poland.
