Details: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited a power substation 50 kilometres from Kyiv on 11 September during her visit to Ukraine. Russian missiles and Iranian-made kamikaze drones hit the 2,000-megawatt power station several times. Parts of the facilities were severely damaged and later repaired. The substation is now fenced with nets to intercept low-flying drones.

During her visit, Baerbock raised the topic of developing renewable energy in Ukraine. More specifically, she believes building a wind farm around the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant would be reasonable.

A declaration of intent was signed during the meeting at Ukraine’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

The German Foreign Ministry noted that last winter saw over 1,500 attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, so the focus of the German Foreign Minister's visit to Kyiv is on measures to ensure and protect the power supply to the population, especially in winter.

Germany was the largest contributor to Ukraine's Energy Support Fund at the end of 2022, with €130 million.

Background: Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs) have commissioned Westinghouse fuel produced jointly with Energoatom, Ukraine's national nuclear energy company, for the first time ever. Fuel for Ukrainian NPPs was previously only produced in Russia.
