Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, has boasted of his plans to expand the Russian army next year.

Quote: "In order to effectively protect the independence and security of our state, a set of measures will be taken to increase the size of the Russian Armed Forces and strengthen them.

It is planned to form another army corps, 7 divisions, 19 brigades, 49 regiments and one flotilla next year." 

Details: Medvedev said that it was decided to continue the work on manning the army with contract soldiers in 2024. He added that Russia will continue "active recruitment" of contract soldiers.

Background:

  • Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on 21 December 2022 that it was necessary to extend to 1.5 million soldiers, as well as to raise the age limit for conscription and increase the number of contract soldiers in Russia.
  • In January 2023, Putin ordered the Russian army to be extended to 1.5 million soldiers over the next three years.
