In order to resolve the conflict between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has suggested holding a peace summit in Spain.

Details: Referring to the escalation in the Middle East, Borrell said he was "hopeful" that a forum on peace could be held in Spain and that it would happen as soon as possible.

He reiterated that Madrid had already hosted a summit in 1991 with representatives of Israel, the Palestinians and Arab countries, which laid the groundwork for the subsequent rapprochement between Israelis and Palestinians in Oslo.

Borrell also agreed that the current conflict obliges the international community to make a political commitment to implement the two-state solution (i.e., the formation and recognition of the state of Palestine), as "very little or nothing" has been done to achieve it 30 years after the Oslo Accords.

Background:

  • Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for an international peace summit to find a long-term solution to the crisis between Israel and the Hamas group last week.
  • This position was supported by the leaders of the European Union in a statement following the summit held on 26-27 October in Brussels.
  • However, there are currently no approximate dates or venue for such a summit, nor is there any understanding of whether the parties will agree to it and whether it will lead to certain results.
