The United States Department of the Treasury on 29 November introduced sanctions against more than 20 individuals and legal entities that illegally finance and materially provide for the Iranian government.

Details: The US government claims that sanctioned individuals facilitated the financing of Iran's Armed Forces and its General Staff, as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, through "a network of front companies both inside Iran and abroad."

Schemes involving sanctioned individuals and companies included the use of intermediaries as well as the forgery of certificates on the country of origin of goods, primarily raw materials such as oil.

Among other things, individuals and legal entities from Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates fell under the latest US restrictions. Some of them, for example, tried to sell Iranian oil condensate under the guise of Malaysian oil.

"Iran generates the equivalent of billions of dollars via commodity sales to fund its destabilising regional activities and support of multiple regional proxy groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah," the US Treasury Department emphasises.

Background:

  • In October, the USA imposed new sanctions on individuals and companies based in Iran, Hong Kong, China and Venezuela for aiding Tehran's ballistic missile and drone programmes.
  • Before that, more than a hundred congressmen from both the Republican and Democratic parties announced a demand for the administration of US President Joe Biden to introduce sanctions against Iran for its role in supporting the terrorist group Hamas after the brutal attack on Israel.
