More than one hundred leading European lawmakers prepared a joint letter of appeal to the US Congress calling for unblocking additional funding for Ukraine, which has become a subject of political controversy.

Details: The open letter was signed by MPs from at least 17 EU countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Ireland. It was initiated by French MP Benjamin Haddad of Emmanuel Macron's party, and signed by Michael Roth, chairman of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, and his Italian counterpart Giulio Tremonti.

In the letter, European lawmakers agree with US concerns that Europe has not taken responsibility for its security for many years. They emphasise that the situation has changed since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"Moreover, military spending has risen all across Europe. American military aid however is critical and urgent," the letter says.

"A Putin victory would embolden our enemies around the world: they are watching and hoping we grow tired. Ukrainians are fighting so we don't have to," the European lawmakers said.

Background: The US Congress has not yet approved Biden's request for additional funding to help Ukraine due to opposition from some Republicans. On 6 December, the bill to assist Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan failed a procedural vote in the Senate.

The Biden administration is considering concessions on migration policy to secure new aid for Ukraine and Israel in the supplemental funding bill, Reuters reports.
