On Monday 18 December, the White House reiterated its call for the US Congress to hurry with the approval of supplemental funding for Ukraine, warning that current funds will only be enough for one military aid package before the end of the year.

Details: Kirby said the US plans to announce one more military aid package for Ukraine by the end of December.

"When that one is done … we will have no more replenishment authority available to us,"  he added, referring to the fact that these military aid packages were allocated from American warehouses, and funds were earmarked to replenish them.

The White House official once again urged Congress to approve US President Joe Biden's request without delay, with additional funding for national security needs, including assistance for Ukraine.

He reiterated that the majority of the funding continues to be invested in American defence companies that manufacture the weapons the Ukrainian Armed Forces need.

Earlier, Pentagon Comptroller Michael McCord alerted the heads of pertinent US Congress committees that the agency only has enough funds to continue supplying military aid to Ukraine until 30 December.

The White House asked Congress to authorise more funding, including over US$60 billion for Ukraine, in October, but the decision stalled in the Senate due to differences of opinion between the two parties on border security with Mexico.

The US Senate and therefore Congress in general are unlikely to advance new border security restrictions, on which the allocation of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine depends, by the end of the year.
