The Russian foreign minister arrived in New York earlier this week to attend UN Security Council meetings on Ukraine and the Middle East.

Lavrov's speech on Monday, 22 January, featured a traditional set of sweeping propaganda messages about Ukraine and the West's unpreparedness for negotiations, criticism of the "peace formula" and the like.

Background:

  • Lavrov and the rest of the Russian leadership need a special permit to travel to the United States, as Western countries have closed their airspace to Russian aircraft.
  • The UK reportedly provided a UN panel of experts with satellite images that may prove that North Korea supplied Russia with weapons in order to initiate an official investigation into the matter.
