"We'll see what that will be. We're going to be hearing from them [Russia] this week. Very shortly, actually, and we'll see," he replied.
Trump also repeated that he wants the "death and the killing to stop".
Background:
- At the beginning of April, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States would soon find out whether Russia was ready for peace.
- This came after numerous violations by Russia of the so-called partial truce, which Russia and Ukraine separately agreed with the US.
- Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expected the US to strengthen sanctions against Russia in response to its refusal to agree to a ceasefire.
- Senior officials in the Trump administration have begun to acknowledge that the United States may not be able to reach a peace agreement on Ukraine in the coming months.
