Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has stated that a ceasefire in Ukraine is currently unrealistic.

Details: Nebenzya claimed that a ceasefire is being hindered by Ukraine violating a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure.

Quote: "We had an attempt at a limited ceasefire regarding energy infrastructure facilities, which was not observed by the Ukrainian side.

Under the current circumstances, talking about a ceasefire is simply unrealistic at this stage."

Previously: US President Donald Trump claimed that "this week" Russia would provide the United States with a response to the proposal for a "ceasefire" in Ukraine.

Background:

  • At the beginning of April, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States would soon find out whether Russia was ready for peace.
  • This came after numerous violations by Russia of the so-called partial truce which Russia and Ukraine separately agreed with the US.
  • Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expected the US to strengthen sanctions against Russia in response to its refusal to agree to a ceasefire.
  • Senior officials in the Trump administration have begun to acknowledge that the United States may not be able to reach a peace agreement on Ukraine in the coming months.
