Paris launches investigation into Russia's killing of French journalist in Ukraine

France's National Anti-terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has opened an investigation into a "war crime" following the death of French photojournalist Antoni Lallican in Ukraine caused by a Russian drone attack.

Details: The investigation has been assigned to the Central Office for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes.
The charge of a "war crime", which falls under PNAT's jurisdiction, involves a "wilful attack on the life and physical or mental integrity of a person protected by international humanitarian law".
Lallican was killed on 3 October by a Russian FPV drone near the city of Druzhkivka in Donetsk Oblast. Kyiv Independent freelance photographer Heorhii Ivanchenkov was with him and was injured.

Background:
- Lallican is the third French journalist to have been killed in Russian attacks in Ukraine.
- French BFMTV journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was killed during an attack on an evacuation convoy in Luhansk Oblast in May 2022 while covering the evacuation.
- Thirty-two-year-old AFP video journalist Arman Soldin was killed while working in Ukraine's east in May 2023.
