Orbán accuses Zelenskyy of "moral blackmail" over Ukraine's EU membership

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is using a "tactic of moral blackmail" and that "Hungary has no moral obligation to support Ukraine's EU accession".

Quote: "It turns out that President Zelenskyy wants to decide what's best for the Hungarians.
He is once again using his usual tactic of moral blackmail to push countries into supporting his war efforts."
Details: Orbán said that "Hungary has no moral obligation to support Ukraine's EU accession".
He stressed that the decision on EU accession is taken unanimously by member states.
Quote: "No country has ever blackmailed its way into the European Union – and it won't happen this time either."
Details: Orbán also referred to the "referendum" on supporting Ukraine's EU membership, in which 95% of participants voted against it.
Quote: "If you wish to change that, the media campaign you're waging against Hungary is probably not the best way to make friends."
Previously: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union regardless of Orbán's position.
Background:
- Orbán recently claimed again that Hungarians do not want to be in the same union as Ukrainians because they do not want to "share their fate" – and Ukrainians, he said, are fated to border Russia. The Hungarian prime minister also said he does not believe that Ukraine is a sovereign state, as its bills are paid by the European Union.
- Zelenskyy believes there are domestic political reasons for Hungary's blocking of Ukraine's further movement towards EU membership.
- The European Commission says that the opening of clusters for Ukraine without Orbán's consent "could be considered", but the decision must be made by EU member states.
