Details: Trump posted a video from Russian media in which the Kremlin leader described the US president as someone who "solves complex problems and crises that have lasted for decades".
In the video, Putin commented on the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, which did not go to Trump, and claimed that the prize has sometimes been awarded undeservedly in the past, so that its "prestige has largely been lost".
Quote from Putin: "Whether or not the US president deserves the Nobel Prize I don't know, but he is indeed doing a lot to resolve complex crises that have dragged on for years, even decades… With regard to the crisis in Ukraine, he is genuinely trying to do that. Some things have worked, others haven't, but perhaps we can still accomplish a lot based on the agreements and discussions in Anchorage."
Details: Putin added that if Trump "manages to complete what he is trying to accomplish in the Middle East, it will be a historic event".
Trump responded to these comments with the words: "Thank you to President Putin!" [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.]
Background:
- On 9 October, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have signed the first stage of a peace plan providing for the release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to an agreed line.
- Trump has repeatedly expressed his disappointment with Putin's actions since their meeting in Alaska and has changed his tone regarding Ukraine.
- The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recently stated that detailed and active discussions are ongoing with the United States about the possible supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. The Russian leader has reacted cautiously to this prospect.
