Details: Defence Secretary John Healey said the United Kingdom has invested £600 million (about US$800 million) this year to accelerate drone deliveries to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Among the UAVs supplied are "tens of thousands" of FPV drones, which the press release says "are crucial to supporting Ukraine's front line".
Quote from Healey: "Putin's dangerous escalation in Ukraine and across Europe must be matched by ramping up our drone production and strengthening NATO's air defences."
Details: The UK government noted that the Drone Capability Coalition, which the UK co-leads with Latvia, is also using funds from several countries to purchase advanced interceptor drones to protect Ukraine from Iranian-made Shahed UAVs.
Quote from the UK government: "Interceptors are being tested on the battlefield right now, with the Drone Capability Coalition expected to award new contracts very soon to provide Ukraine with further kit, including around 35,000 new interceptor systems in the coming months."
Background:
- In June, it was reported that the UK is investing a record £350 million (US$472 million) this year to increase the supply of drones to Ukraine from 10,000 in 2024 to 100,000 in 2025.
- On 11 September, Ukraine and the UK signed an agreement to produce Ukrainian interceptor drones.
- The UK Ministry of Defence earlier announced that the first joint project will be a new advanced air defence interceptor drone called Project OCTOPUS.
