Details: The Financial Times says that the White House has increased pressure on Ukraine and its allies to push them towards reaching a deal with Moscow, sparking concern in European capitals and in Washington that Trump is aligning with Russia's demands.
On Sunday, Trump criticised European and Ukrainian leadership on social media for failing to make progress towards ending the war.
Since the United States presented its 28-point plan to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week, Ukraine's European allies have called for "additional work" on the proposal.
One European official voiced concern that Trump could end support for Ukraine out of disappointment, leaving Zelenskyy and the country in a dangerous position.
"That's a scenario we are obviously planning for," they said.
However, European diplomats expect further meetings between France, Germany and the United Kingdom next week. Potential participants include the leaders of Poland and Finland and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"We are trying to come up with something that flies as a counter-offer," one diplomat said.
Background:
- Following the 23 November talks in Geneva, Ukraine and the United States prepared a revised and updated peace framework document expected to emphasise respect for Ukraine's sovereignty.
- The United Kingdom, Germany and France have also drafted counterproposals to the US 28-point "peace plan" aimed at making it more advantageous for Ukraine.
- According to Reuters, the counterproposal developed by the UK, France and Germany is based on the US "peace plan" but adjusts some points and, in some cases, proposes to remove them.
