Putin also claimed that the American side is interested in organising mining at the plant.

Quote: "However, the sides are considering electricity supplies to Ukraine at the initiative of the United States. Separately, the head of state noted that Ukrainians continue to work at the plant, but now they have Russian passports".

Background:

  • Putin said that Russia in talks with the United States continues to demand control over the entire Donbas, including areas it has failed to capture militarily.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during an online briefing with journalists on Saturday 20 December that the Ukrainian side had conveyed to the US its position on issues where a compromise has so far been impossible in negotiations on a "peace agreement" with Russia. He stressed that one of these issues is "the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, our ZNPP".
