Details: Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted that the conversation had been organised by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and focused on the ongoing negotiations surrounding the Russian-Ukrainian war.

"Very useful in consolidating our joint assessment of the overall situation. We will continue to work with our Ukrainian and American friends in the coming days and weeks," Stubb wrote.

Merz described the call as "further consultations today with our European and Canadian partners in the Berlin Format".

"We are moving the peace process forward. Transparency and honesty are now required from everyone – including Russia," the Chancellor said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the conversation "a good discussion" and noted that it addressed support for Ukraine, its security, and future reconstruction.

"Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in the accession to the EU. It's also a key security guarantee in its own right. Accession doesn't only benefit countries that join; as the successive waves of enlargement show, the whole of Europe benefits," von der Leyen said.

Background:

  • The announcement of the call confirmed that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also took part.
  • As reported, ahead of Zelenskyy's visit to meet Trump in Florida this weekend, a joint call also took place with European leaders and the Prime Minister of Canada.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron has said that a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing will be held in Paris in early January, where countries plan to finalise the specific contributions of each state to the system of security guarantees for Ukraine.
