Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday 30 December that the United States has agreed, as part of security guarantees for Ukraine after a peace deal is reached, to deploy its troops to the Russian-Ukrainian border or the line of contact.

Details: Tusk said the conversation assessed the outcome of the first stage of very serious negotiations involving the leaders of Ukraine, Europe, the US and Canada.

He expressed the view that peace is already on the horizon and could be achieved within weeks.

Tusk believes the basis for hope that the war could end is the US declaration of readiness to take part in security guarantees for Ukraine after a peace agreement is concluded.

The Polish prime minister said that this would include the presence of American troops, for example on the border or along the line of contact between Ukraine and Russia, adding that such fairly unequivocal statements had appeared for the first time and that it remained to be seen how consistent partners on the other side of the Atlantic would be.

Background: French President Emmanuel Macron has said that a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing will be held in Paris in early January, where countries plan to finalise the specific contributions of each state to the system of security guarantees for Ukraine.
