Australian volunteer reportedly killed in action fighting for Ukraine

Australian volunteer Russell Allan Wilson, who was serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in Donetsk Oblast while carrying out a combat mission on 12 December.

Details: A friend of Wilson said he was killed during his last mission and had been due to get married a week later.

In a social media post dated 19 December, a man who describes himself as a US Army veteran wrote that Wilson "chose to stay when it would have been easier to leave".

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is attempting to verify reports of Russell Allan Wilson's death.

Background: On 12 May, it was reported that an Australian volunteer with a humanitarian organisation had been killed in Ukraine near the city of Izium.
