UK Defence Ministry chief: I want to be defence secretary who deploys British troops to Ukraine

UK Defence Secretary John Healey has said he hopes to become the first defence secretary to deploy British troops to Ukraine, as this would signal the end of the war.
Source: The Telegraph, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Healey said that "2026 must be the year this terrible war ends".
Quote: "There is no heavier burden on any defence secretary or any government than committing our Armed Forces on operations… I want to be the defence secretary who deploys British troops to Ukraine – because this will mean that this war is finally over. It will mean we have negotiated peace in Ukraine. And a secure Europe needs a strong, sovereign Ukraine."
Details: Healey also thanked for the military support and generosity of the British people, who "opened their doors" to Ukrainian refugees in the first weeks after the start of Russia's aggression.
"I am proud that the UK is united for Ukraine. I am proud of the highest-ever level of military support we're providing this year," he said.
Healey also praised Ukrainians who continue to "fight with that same huge courage they showed on 24 February 2022".
Quote: "We are putting Ukraine in the strongest possible position to achieve a just and lasting peace on their terms. Ukrainians have shown they do not fear Russian aggression. The only thing Ukraine fears is Western fatigue. But as President Zelenskyy knows, Ukraine's friends will never tire."
Background:
- Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson believes the UK and its allies should send troops to Ukraine immediately to "flip a switch" in Russian leader Vladimir Putin's head.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously said that the United States would take the lead in monitoring the cessation of hostilities after a peace agreement with Russia is reached.
