Trump's envoy Witkoff says Zelenskyy-Putin meeting possible in coming weeks

US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has suggested that "good news" on ending Russia's war against Ukraine could emerge in the coming weeks and has not ruled out a summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Details: Witkoff said Ukraine and Russia are engaged in a "silly war" over territory.
"You know, everyone throws the word 'dignity' around. But what does dignity get you if you have that amount of killing?"
"They [Ukraine and Russia – ed.] don't seem like they really want to fight with one another, and I don't think they do," Witkoff said.
He suggested that the main difficulty in reaching peace lies "at the leadership levels" of the two states.
Quote: "We are hopeful, Jared [Kushner] and I, that – we've put some proposals on the table to both sides that will bring them together in the next three weeks and maybe even result in a summit between Zelenskyy and President Putin." [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.]
Details: Witkoff did not rule out that Donald Trump could join such a meeting but added that the US president "does not want to come to a meeting unless he feels that he can consummate this thing and get the best result".
"And he uniquely has that power to do it. So hopefully you will be hearing some good news in the coming weeks," the envoy added.
Background:
- Following trilateral meetings in Geneva on 17-18 February, Zelenskyy said he sees progress in the military area of the talks but not in the political one.
- On 20 February, Zelenskyy said another round of talks with Russia and the US on ending the war could take place before the end of the month.
- He also accused Russia of dragging out negotiations that could already have reached the final stage.
