Details: The Kremlin stated that the ceasefire will run from 16:00 Moscow time on 11 April until the end of the day on 12 April 2026.
Quote: "By a decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, in connection with the approaching Orthodox holiday of Easter, a ceasefire is declared from 16:00 on 11 April until the end of the day on 12 April 2026."
More details: According to the Kremlin statement, Russia expects Ukraine to follow Moscow's example as regards the ceasefire. "We are proceeding from the assumption that the Ukrainian side will follow the Russian Federation's example (regarding the 'Easter truce')," the statement reads.
Putin has also ordered his armed forces to cease hostilities for the duration of the ceasefire, but to be prepared to respond to the enemy.
Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on Sunday 12 April.
Background:
- On 30 March, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was willing to agree to a ceasefire during the Easter holidays and to an energy ceasefire.
- However, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that the Kremlin would not support Zelenskyy's proposal for an Easter ceasefire, citing its lack of "clear formulation".
- In 2025, Putin declared a three-day Easter truce, purportedly halting all hostilities in Ukraine from the evening of 19 April until midnight on 21 April.
- On 19 April, however, Russia carried out a drone attack on Ukraine.
