Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has responded to US President Donald Trump's claim that Ukraine "doesn't have the cards" in the peace negotiations with Russia, insisting that Ukraine does indeed have cards and that "this is the reality".

Details: Sybiha said he is confident that the most difficult period in Ukraine's relations with the US is "behind us". He noted that Ukraine and the US have managed to stabilise this area properly, in a very pragmatic way, with respect for each other's positions, and Ukraine does in fact "have cards".

Sybiha once again emphasised that Ukraine welcomes US efforts to bring about a just and comprehensive peace.

He said his personal assessment is that achieving a just and comprehensive peace is not realistic without the US and the support of President Trump. Ukraine needs the US to be involved and welcomes its peace efforts.

Background:

  • In March, Trump once again criticised Ukraine over the lack of progress in the negotiations to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, claiming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "doesn't have the cards".
  • He made the same claim in February 2025 during the meeting with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. Trump said the Ukrainian president was "not in a good position" and did not "have the cards", adding that he would have the cards with the United States.
