Details: According to the report, EU countries are seeking compensation for weapons, ammunition and equipment worth €43 billion that have been transferred to Ukraine.
The total value of reimbursement requests for military aid provided to Ukraine by EU member states has indeed reached €43 billion, the sources confirmed.
The amount has increased as EU members continued supplying Ukraine with support and transferring equipment from their own stockpiles and arsenals, despite Hungary blocking €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility, which was intended for reimbursement.
Officials note that defence expenditure is not reimbursed at 100%, but at a set rate. Nevertheless, even if the blocked €6.6 billion is released, it would still not be sufficient to cover all compensation claims.
EU officials are therefore considering alternative mechanisms to ensure adequate reimbursement for member states.
Background:
- Since 2022, the European Peace Facility has been used to reimburse EU member states for the military assistance they have provided to Ukraine. However, Hungary has been blocking further disbursements from the fund for several years.
- It is also noted that the EU is currently replenishing the European Peace Facility using revenues from frozen Russian assets, while Hungary's government under outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the EU against the fund and the Council of the EU over this decision.
