US–Iran talks could resume as early as next week – WSJ

Negotiations between the United States and Iran could resume in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, as early as next week.

Source: The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources

Details: It is reported that both sides are working with mediators to finalise a 14-point memorandum of understanding that would set out the framework for negotiations aimed at ending the war for a period of one month.

The draft reportedly includes discussions on Iran's nuclear programme, easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the possible handover of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium to another country.

Nevertheless, sources stressed that key issues remain unresolved and could still derail the talks.

Background:

On 1 May, the White House told Congress in a letter that hostilities against Iran had ended, despite the continued presence of US armed forces in the region.
On 30 April, Iran, through Pakistani mediators, submitted updated proposals to the United States regarding an agreement to end the war.
US President Donald Trump said he was dissatisfied with Iran's peace proposals, while his representatives continued negotiations by phone in an effort to reach a deal.
