EU officially intends to join agreement on special tribunal for Russia

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has announced that the European Union has officially informed the Council of Europe of its intention to join the agreement on the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

Details: On 5 May, the Council of the European Union approved a decision on the European Union signing the Enlarged Partial Agreement on the special tribunal for the crime of aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine.

Then, on 13 May, Sybiha stated that the EU had officially informed the Council of Europe of its intention to join the agreement on the special tribunal.

"It is imperative to hold the leadership of the aggressor state, as well as all those responsible, fully accountable and bring them to justice," Sybiha added.

Background:

• As of 12 May, 32 states were prepared to join the agreement.
• The agreement on establishing the special tribunal will be put to a vote at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 14-15 May in Chișinău.
• Ukraine expects that the tribunal will consider not only the actions of top Russian officials but also those of states that provided direct support to Moscow in the war against Ukraine.
