French Foreign Ministry: France keeps dialogue with China in bid to push Russia towards ending war in Ukraine

Quote from Confavreux regarding Russian leader Vladimir Putin's visit to China: "What we observe are extremely biased, unbalanced relations between Russia and China, all the more so after Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which cut Russia off from many of its partners, particularly in the energy and economic sectors."
Details: Confavreux said France maintains an ongoing dialogue with China in order to convey messages regarding Russia's war against Ukraine.
Quote from Confavreux: "This channel allows us to ask China to use its privileged relationship with Moscow to call for an end to this aggression."
Details: Confavreux also linked Paris' response to the growing China-Russia cooperation to the priorities of France's G7 presidency, which focuses on addressing global economic imbalances.
Quote from Confavreux: "This is a priority that is becoming even more urgent as global security tensions rise."
For reference: France is holding the G7 presidency in 2026. Its official priorities include reducing macroeconomic imbalances, strengthening economic security and coordinating responses to geopolitical, financial and energy challenges. A summit of G7 leaders will take place from 15 to 17 June in Évian-les-Bains, France.
Background: French President Emmanuel Macron said in late April that Europe is experiencing a unique moment in which the leaders of the US, China and Russia are confronting the Europeans.
