Children are being evacuated from the Artek camp in occupied Crimea. The decision was taken amid electricity supply problems, fuel shortages and a deteriorating security situation.

Details: According to a decree published by the Russian occupation administration in Crimea, bookings, admissions and accommodation of children and children's groups at holiday and health resorts on the peninsula will be suspended from 22 June to 1 September.

The restrictions also apply to hotels, recreation bases and other accommodation facilities where children were due to take part in tourist, sport or cultural events, including festivals, gatherings, training camps and excursions.

Kremlin-aligned Russian agency TASS reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Education, that the authorities have begun a scheduled evacuation of children from the Artek children's centre to their places of permanent residence. The process is being coordinated by representatives of Russian secret services.

Background:

  • In 2025 alone, Russians forcibly transferred nearly 11,000 children to 164 camps on the territory of Russia and occupied Crimea. Human rights defenders note that the scale of such transfers has increased compared to previous years.
  • They say children are subjected to so-called "re-education": they are isolated from Ukrainian cultural, linguistic and social environments in order to weaken their ties with Ukraine.
