Details: Ukraine is set to receive the first €3.2 billion tranche of the €90 billion EU loan on 25-26 June.
"The disbursement of the first €3.2 billion tranche has been timed to coincide with the Recovery Conference, which will take place in Gdańsk on 25-26 June," the source told European Pravda.
The official clarified that the decision to provide Ukraine with the first tranche of the loan had been taken last week.
A second tranche worth €5.9 billion, intended to support Ukrainian forces, is also expected to be disbursed by the end of June, the European official said.
Background:
- Polish President Karol Nawrocki did not receive an invitation to the Ukraine Recovery Conference.
- On the evening of 19 June, Nawrocki took the decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle in connection with the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. He said Poland would not allow EU accession for those who do not understand the need to renounce the "cult of totalitarianism and violence".
- Following the decision, a number of current and former Ukrainian officials announced that they would be returning their Polish honours. Questions have also been raised about whether Zelenskyy will attend this year's Ukraine Recovery Conference.
- Zelenskyy has suggested that the decision to strip him of the Order of the White Eagle is connected to internal political rivalry in Poland and efforts to stir up anti-Ukrainian sentiment.
