The key 750 kV Dniprovska power line, which is vital to the safety of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), has been repaired but cannot currently be put back into operation because of major damage to a substation.

Quote: "The 750 kV Dniprovska line has not yet been brought back into operation because of extensive damage to its connecting substation, located more than 100 km northwest of the ZNPP. The substation was reportedly damaged during military activity in late May, and IAEA staff experts who visited the facility this week observed severe damage to essential equipment. Repair efforts are not expected to be completed in the near term, but are on-going."

Details: IAEA clarified that technically complex repairs to the line and other critical energy infrastructure have been carried out after extensive mine clearance along the front line under a local ceasefire mediated by the agency.

Background:

  • The 750 kV power line was disconnected in March. Since 24 March, the ZNPP has received power only from the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 backup line.
  • In early June, a localised ceasefire was declared around the ZNPP to allow repair work to be carried out.
