New EU sanctions to target those involved in production of Russian Shahed drones

Following Russia's recent attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has announced new sanctions proposals targeting five legal entities and one individual.

Details: The proposed sanctions target entities involved in developing and manufacturing components that enhance the combat capabilities of Russian Shahed and Geran drones.

Background:

• On the night of 1-2 July, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv, killing 21 people, based on the latest reports.
• Earlier the same day, Kallas said she intends to propose new sanctions against Russia following the large-scale attack on Kyiv.
• Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged Western partners to urgently provide Ukraine with air defence systems following the Russian large-scale attack on Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in this context, called for contributions to the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) programme for the purchase of US weapons for Ukraine's Armed Forces.
