Details: The Russian Embassy in Moldova announced today that the Russian House in Chișinău will close on 4 July and that some of its functions will be transferred to the embassy's cultural section.
Quote from the embassy: "With great regret, we are forced to inform you that the Russian Centre for Science and Culture (Russian House) in Chișinău is closing its doors following a decision by the Moldovan government. For many years our centre has been a place of meetings, dialogue and friendship.
The long-standing work of the Russian House, with the active participation of local public and creative circles, has demonstrated that it meets the needs and aspirations of the citizens of Moldova. No restrictions or measures of pressure will diminish the enormous interest in Russian culture, which has always served the cause of peace, mutual understanding and the spiritual enrichment of peoples."
More details: The embassy said that anyone seeking assistance regarding humanitarian and educational cooperation should contact the embassy's cultural section from now on.
The leadership of the unrecognised "republic" of Transnistria had previously said it was willing to host the Russian House after its closure in Chișinău in order to "counter destructive attempts to limit Russia's presence".
The Moldovan government noted that the authorities in Tiraspol have no legal authority to make such a decision. It also pointed out that the Russian House had encouraged Moldovan citizens to study in Russia, and under the current circumstances, anyone who does so risks ending up in the ranks of the Russian armed forces and on the battlefield in Ukraine.
Background:
- On 5 December 2025, Moldova officially notified the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs of its decision to terminate the Agreement on Cultural Centres under which the Russian House operated. The agreement was due to cease to have effect on 4 July.
- Discussions about closing the Russian House in Chișinău began in February 2025 after yet another incident involving Russian UAVs crashing on Moldovan territory during attacks on Ukrainian ports in Odesa Oblast.
